Они выбрали одну из самых сложных, опасных и романтичных профессий. Недаром о мужестве и воинской доблести моряков ходят легенды. Троим друзьям – молодым офицерам флота – предстоит пройти долгий и опасный путь, чтобы доказать, что понятия «дружба», «верность» и «честь» для них не пустые слова.

Офицер ВМФ Алексей Крылов (Анатолий Руденко) по просьбе своей бабушки Марии Ильиничны (Екатерина Васильева) приезжает домой, где ему предстоит встретиться со своей давней любовью Леной (Глафира Тарханова) и узнать семейную тайну, которую его родители хранили много лет.

Оказывается, в раннем детстве Алексей был усыновлен. Его настоящая мать умерла при родах, а настоящим отцом был командир подводной лодки, которая в 80-х годах пропала без вести во время дежурства в Средиземном море. Через некоторое время в США появилось секретное оборудование с пропавшей подлодки. Отца Алексея и весь экипаж обвинили в пособничестве врагу, назвали предателями Родины и засекретили всю информацию о походе. Маленького Алексея усыновил младший сын Марии Ильиничны Владимир (Анатолий Котенев) и его жена Нина (Ирина Розанова).

Мария Ильинична уговаривает Лену сделать первый шаг и попытаться снова наладить отношения с внуком. Однако все оказывается не так просто. Рассказ Марии Ильиничны об отце не дает Алексею покоя.

Он возвращается на службу и решает во что бы то ни стало разобраться в истории своей семьи и выяснить все обстоятельства, связанные с гибелью подлодки. В расследовании Алексею помогают его лучшие друзья – офицеры флота Сергей Апраксин (Алексей Анищенко) и Виктор Храпов (Михаил Тарабукин), а также его новый знакомый – академик Бессонов (Василий Лановой), принимавший когда-то участие в конструировании этой лодки.

Алексей уверен: никакие препятствия не заставят его отказаться от своей цели. Он должен доказать, что люди, которых долгое время считали предателями, были настоящими героями своей страны. Но удастся ли ему найти подлодку и не потерять при этом семью и свою настоящую любовь?
