8 ноября 1975 года замполит корабля «Сторожевой» Валерий Саблин при поддержке экипажа поднял восстание.

Протестуя против брежневского режима, он арестовал командира корабля, самовольно снял судно с рейда в Риге и повел в Ленинград. Объявив корабль независимой от государственных и партийных органов территорией, Саблин планировал встать на рейд рядом с «Авророй» и оттуда ежедневно выходить в телеэфир, призывая советский народ к бессрочной забастовке. Ничего подобного в стране не случалось со времен броненосца «Потемкина» и «Лейтенанта Шмидта».
Большой противолодочный корабль «Сторожевой» был остановлен в Ирбенском заливе советскими бомбардировщиками Су-24, которые сбросили на мятежное судно серию снарядов, повредивших руль. Затем на палубу была высажена абордажная группа, арестовавшая зачинщика восстания.
Военная коллегия Верховного суда СССР обвинила Саблина в самом постыдном для офицера преступлении — измене Родине — и приговорила к расстрелу. В 1994 году дело Валерия Саблина было пересмотрено Военной коллегией Верховного суда Российской Федерации. В обвинительном заключении ему заменили «расстрельную» статью об измене Родине на статьи о воинских преступлениях: превышение власти, неповиновение и сопротивление начальнику. Казненного Саблина задним числом приговорили к 10 годам тюремного заключения. В посмертной реабилитации ему отказали…
